If you’re considering a career as a professional security guard, you’re entering one of the most consistently in-demand industries in the UK. In this guide, we cover everything you need to know – from the basic entry requirements and personal qualities needed, through to SIA licensing, training, and the types of roles available once you’re qualified.
At Platinum Gate Security, we’re always on the lookout for dedicated individuals to join our security services team in Exeter and across Devon. If you’re interested in working with us, this guide is a great place to start.
Before you begin training, there are a few baseline requirements you must meet to work legally as a security officer in the UK:
Meeting these requirements is the starting point. From there, the pathway to becoming a licensed security guard is structured and straightforward.

The security industry is one of the most stable employment sectors in the UK. Businesses, public spaces, events, retail premises, and construction sites all require professional security cover, and that demand doesn’t go away. Whether you’re looking for shift-based work that fits around other commitments or a long-term career with progression into management or specialist roles, security offers genuine opportunities.
As a security guard, you’ll also develop transferable skills – conflict resolution, report writing, risk assessment, CCTV operation, and first aid that are valued across a wide range of industries.
The core responsibility of a security guard is to maintain a safe and secure environment for people and property. In practice, this looks different depending on the role and setting, but common duties include:
Security officers must be prepared for a role that can be unpredictable. Staying calm under pressure, exercising good judgement, and acting lawfully at all times are central to the role.
Technical training can be learned, but the best security officers tend to share a set of core qualities that make them effective in the field:
If these qualities describe you, a career in security is worth considering seriously.

To work legally as a security guard in the UK, you must hold a valid licence issued by the Security Industry Authority (SIA). Working without one is a criminal offence.
You’ll need to complete a Level 2 Award for Door Supervisors or a Level 2 Award for Security Guards – both delivered by SIA-approved training providers. These courses cover:
The door supervision course is worth considering even if you plan to work as a guard – it qualifies you for both roles and opens up more employment opportunities.
Once you’ve passed your training, you can apply for your SIA licence online. The current licence fee is £190 (correct as of 2025). The SIA will carry out identity checks and a criminal record check as part of the application. Processing typically takes a few weeks, after which you’ll receive your SIA badge.
With your SIA licence in hand, you’re legally qualified to work across a range of security settings. Many employers, including Platinum Gate Security – will consider applicants who are newly licensed alongside those with experience.
Once qualified, there’s a broad range of roles to consider. At Platinum Gate Security, we operate across the following specialisms:
Each role brings different day-to-day responsibilities and environments, so there’s real variety once you’re in the industry.
Security is predominantly shift-based work. Many roles involve 12-hour shifts covering days, nights, weekends, and bank holidays – so flexibility is important. Some guards work fixed site assignments, while others cover mobile patrol routes or respond to call-outs.
The role can involve long periods of vigilance and standing, as well as moments that require quick, composed decision-making. It’s a job that suits people who are self-motivated, take their responsibilities seriously, and take pride in the safety of the people and places they protect.
